In September-October 1942 the Japanese launched several counterattacks but to no avail. 9 February 1943 the Americans took over the Guadalcanal July-August 1943 captured the southern and Central part of the archipelago of the Solomon Islands in November and December partially of Bougainville island and New Britain. November 20-23, the us Marines captured the Gilbert Islands, the Tarawa Atoll in January and February 1944, landed in the Marshall Islands island Roy Kwajelein and Majuro.
During the spring of 1944, the Americans conducted a series of amphibious operations on the North coast of New Guinea that has accelerated the progress of the allied forces from the southern part of the island. During the summer and autumn, the allies liberated a large part of New Guinea and the Japanese were surrounded in Central and South-Western part of the island and surrendered only at the end
